The 2021 Highlander is now split into six trim levels, which are the L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum.

At Handy Toyota, we strive to help you find the right vehicle for you. Read on to learn more about the new 2021 Toyota Highlander.

Performance

Powering the 2021 Toyota Highlander is a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which puts out 295 horsepower for more-than-sufficient acceleration ability. Hooked up to the engine is an 8-speed automatic transmission for smooth shifts. Add auto start-stop technology to eliminate engine idling and a front-wheel-drive layout, and the Highlander maxes out at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. However, there's the option of an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system to optimize traction on slippery surfaces. Accompanying the AWD system is a traction management system-with Mud/Sand, Rock/Dirt, and Normal modes-to adjust driving performance to the type of terrain you encounter to ensure maximum tire grip on the driving surfaces of St. Albans and Colchester.

Seating

With three rows of fabric-trimmed seats, the 2021 Highlander is meant to hold up to eight people. However, if you go with the higher-level XSE, Limited, or Platinum, the second-row bench-style seat is replaced by a pair of captain's chairs to reduce maximum capacity to seven. Eight-way driver-side power-adjustability is also standard. Front-seat heating, synthetic leather upholstery, an upgrade to 10-way driver-side power adjustability, and 4-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat debut at the XLE trim level. Leather upholstery and steering-wheel heating are some of the enhancements at the Limited trim level. Features such as second-row heating and panoramic moonroof are exclusive to the top-level Platinum.

Safety

With this Toyota SUV, you get the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite, which loads up the vehicle with the following driver-assistance technologies:

  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
  • Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Lane departure alert
  • Automatic high beams
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Road sign assist

If a crash occurs, the Highlander can deploy any of the eight airbags installed throughout the cabin. Notably, Toyota adds downhill assist control on AWD vehicles for a controlled descent. Front and rear parking assist is added at the XSE trim level, and Toyota replaces the rearview camera with a 360-degree one for a surround-view.

Comfort and Convenience

Regarding infotainment, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is loaded. Anchored by an eight-inch touchscreen, the Entune multimedia system brings together components such as a six-speaker AM/FM stereo system, five USB ports (one for media and four for charging), Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, a Wi-Fi hotspot, three months of SiriusXM Radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. Tri-zone automatic climate control on the Highlander means that there are separate controls for the driver, front-seat passenger, and second-row occupants. At the XLE trim level, expect a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display (in place of the 4.2-inch), wireless phone charging ability, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, and a navigation system. For an 11-speaker JBL premium audio system, go with at least the Limited. Only the Platinum comes with a digital rearview mirror (in place of the physical one), Driver Easy Speak for amplifying the driver's voice to passengers in the back, a 12.3-inch touchscreen that supplants the standard 8-inch display, and a 10-inch head-up display.
