Where do you take your Toyota vehicle? I suppose that's a pretty broad question, as many of you would likely follow it up with a variety of answers depending on your model (and possibly the year thereof). For instance if you drive a Prius, your answer is probably city driving or highway driving; if you answered Camry or Corolla, the same response as the Prius could apply coupled with more of a road trip vibe; and a Tacoma driver would possibly hit the trails if they had a T|X Pro Edition, TRD Sport edition, or even an Off-Road variant with BFGoodrich tire upgrades and a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) rock rail system for vehicular safety.
But what if you answered Tundra or FJ Cruiser or, more poignantly, "I have a Tundra Limited / Tundra Platinum / FJ Cruiser TRD Big Brake Edition?" If these are your responses, chances are your answer spectrum expands: off road, trails, mountain climbing, and the like all become realities the raison d'etre because the aforementioned Toyota off road models all come with team Toyota Racing Development's TRD Big Brake Kit.
Shown here with the TRD alloy wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A tires and TRD Performance Big Brake Kit upgrades, the 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Edition is about as off-road ready as a vehicle comes! |
This image shows a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser TRD Big Brake Kit on the standard FJ Cruiser alloy wheel wrapped in Bridgestone Dueller H/T tires. You will also notice the slotted design on the rotor which allows for better cooling and a more durable brake/rotor. |
Shown again on the 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser TRD Big Brake Kit edition at Handy Toyota, when viewed closely you can see the TRD-red color and TRD graphics of the TRD Big Brake Kit's caliper. |
You'll know the Trail Teams Edition 2012 FJ Cruiser when you see it thanks to the distinctive FJ Cruiser Trail Teams insignia, monotone paint application, and TRD alloy wheels and TRD Big Brake Kit. |
As hedonistic off road guru website AutoTruckBoys.com explains of the TRD Big Brake Kit shown above: "If your goal is to improve the overall performance of your [FJ Cruiser, Tundra Limited, or Tundra Platinum], then an improved braking system should be in your near future" (source: autotruckboys.com, "Toyota OEM FJ Cruiser TRD Performance Big Brake Kit Front Set - description, 2009).
The TRD Big Brake Kit is not just a shiny set of calipers in TRD-red meant to show off the goods under the hood that your Toyota truck or SUV is trying to brake; instead it's an incredibly huge improvement over the standard, OEM Toyota caliper system and is meant for far more aggressive use. The powerful TRD Big Brake Kit features larger, more aggressive rotors that have been slotted to maximize heat dispersion and thanks to a stainless steel composition the TRD Performance Big Brake Kit will out-last the normal calipers as well.
In addition to the obvious caliper enhancement and more aggressive brake rotors, the TRD Big Brake Kit includes a set of four-piston calipers designed for maximum grip on larger brake rotors - such as the whopping 20-inch alloys of the Toyota Tundra Limited and Tundra Platinum series. Degradation isn't an issue with the Big Brake Kit either thanks to the aforementioned quality composition, but what's more (or equally) important is that the high strength steel yields more braking power. To add to the potency of the Big Brake Kit, the FJ Cruiser Team Trails TRD Big Brake Kit or Tundra Limited and Tundra Platinum houses a braided stainless steel brake line set to completely eliminate flexing of the brake lines during extraneous use.
Though we love stocking 2012 Toyota Tundra Limited trucks, Toyota FJ Cruiser SUVs, and Tundra Platinum trucks that house the TRD Big Brake Kit pre-attached, that doesn't mean you can't get yourself a set. Handy Toyota of St. Albans, Vermont's master parts manager can order them in a heartbeat if you call him at toll-free at 888-447-8961 or if you fill out a parts order form online with your VIN (vehicle identification number) which you can locate on the door jamb, sometimes on the glass, under the hood, and several other places.
Here is an example of a full Toyota Motors USA vehicle identification number tag, or VIN tag, from a new 2011 Toyota Rav4. Notice there are 17 alphanumeric characters. |
On other makes and models or areas of the vehicle the VIN plate or tag may be very different. Here on Handy Toyota's used 2008 Lexus IS 250 AWD we see a much smaller tag with only the VIN. |
As if that wasn't great enough, our Toyota service team can easily install the TRD Performance Big Brake Kit on your Toyota vehicle! Simply schedule an appointment online or call the service team's toll free number 888-594-1392, extension 31. If you're a do-it-yourself kind of person, you'll be happy to know with a little bit of maintenance, car repair, or service know-how you can install the TRD Big Brake Kit on your own. I have 2000 Toyota Tundra Limited Access Cab 4WD 4.7-liter V8. Can the TRD performance big brake kit be put on this truck?
Bob,
Thank you for reading the Handy Toyota blog and thank you for your interest in the awesome TRD performance big brake kit! Unfortunately the short answer is no, this brake kit from Toyota Racing Development is not available on your 2000 Toyota Tundra. In fact, our parts master Ray tells me it will only fit 2007 model year trucks (estimated; possibly 2006 he says) and later as the wheels were not as large as they are now - generally 18 inches or more - until the TRD Big Brake Kit was released.
Perhaps you'd be interested in a trade? Just because we're currently loaded with new 2012 Toyota Tundra trucks doesn't mean we can't fit you into something else!
