Upcoming Toyota vehicles will use JBL's new GreenEdge technology

If you've ever taken an upgraded Toyota vehicle from the higher-end of our lineup for a test drive, chances are you noticed the crystal clear sound as you tested the radio or CD player.  That audio is powered by Toyota's top of the line speaker provider JBL Audio, makers of some of the best sounding speakers on the market.  Truth be told they aren't of the same price range as, for example, Bose products, but you'd be far from accurate to assume the price difference equates to poor quality on JBL's behalf.

However, along with those amazingly deep bass rhythms and clear as day treble sounds comes one thing just as clear:  power consumption.  In order to make those sounds audibly ideal, you need to feed some serious energy to those speakers, head units, and so on.  Or at least this used to be the case.

Enter JBL's new GreenEdge Audio system, set to release in many upcoming 2012 Toyota vehicles starting with the soon to release Prius v, the larger version of the Prius.  Everything up until now has been all about eco-friendly tactics with regards to the Prius MPV, such as the 42 miles per gallon combined, the best in class cabin room, etc., so it comes as no surprise that the new GreenEdge audio technology will be a part of the surefire hit that is the Prius v.

To churn out amazing sound quality and lower power use by up to 50%, JBL needed to employ some interesting tactics.  The GreenEdge audio system was achieved through the following means:

  • GreenEdge amp chartHigh-voltage amplification lowers heat in the system's electrical components, which frees up power to supply the amplifier.  This leads to the aforementioned 50% reduction in energy consumption while keeping the sound quality up to JBL standards
  • Using 8 loudspeakers, the highly efficient design allows for a greater sound output with lower input power.  In the Prius v's case, the speakers use the same amount of power you would need for a 120-watt system while sounding like a normal set of JBL speakers at 600-watts
  • In addition to the new, lower power use ideology, the new technology also allows each speaker to be monitored by a signal-processing tool that can literally adjust the amplifier signal to each individual speaker.  The GreenEdge system also uses specially designed lenses and active equalization, all of which combines for perhaps an even better sounding speaker - and again, all for half the power

Word on the street is that the 2012 Camry Hybrid XLE may also have an optional GreenEdge system from JBL, although this isn't yet confirmed.  Stay tuned to the Handy Toyota blog to find out more about the JBL GreenEdge sound system, the Prius v, and more eco-friendly initiatives by subscribing today.
