Brief History of the Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser has a long and illustrious history, starting way back in 1951 Japan.  In 1935, as World War II began to escalate, long before American intervention, Toyoda initiated the G1 truck, with the intention of urbanizing Japan through ease of travel.  A year later, the first Toyota Corporation was developed as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works.  By 1950, the G1 Trucks were renamed GB, combining a 75 horsepower Type B engine, and development on a 4X4 began.

A year later, the GB was scrapped in favor of the first Land Cruiser, circa 1951, called the BJ.  By 1953, Toyoda had figured out how to utilize mass production to really send the BJ off the line quickly, picked up a Government contract with the Japanese National Police Agency, and switched the name to Land Cruiser.  In 1954 the Land Cruiser was the go to vehicle for the Japanese, similar to the Model T earlier on in American society.

By 1958, the Land Cruiser had reached such levels of popularity that it was introduced into the United States and from 1961-1965, it was the best selling Toyota in the U.S.  By 1968, the 100,000th Land Cruiser was sold in the States; four years later that number reached 200,000, and only a year after that 300,000.  Needless to say, the Land Cruiser was deemed a success.

In 1975, Toyota Motor Corporation in creased the meat under the hood by jumping to a 4.2 liter engine with four speed transmission.  They also increased the number of models or body styles, giving people the choice of a longer Land Cruiser Wagon, versus what is shown to the right.  As demand rose, Toyota met it with increased options and availability.

By 1980, a 4.2 liter version of the wildly popular Toyota Land Cruiser had been released, and soon after total sales of the vehicle had reached one million, a 700,000 increase in seven short years.   In 1995, the full time four wheel drive was introduced, making the Land Cruiser the benchmark industry standard; whenever someone mentioned the blooming Sport Utility Vehicle market, Land Cruiser was synonymous.

Success continued, and by 1998 the 4.7 Liter i-Force V8 edition was released, making it a powerful contender for SUV leader among several other well established franchises.  By 2003, the four-millionth Land Cruiser was sold in the United States alone, solidifying the vehicles place in the minds of SUV aficionados and four by four fans alike.

The newest version, the 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser looks to increase on all fronts, through comfort, style, and the raw power we've come to expect from the same engines that power the Tundra.  Through humble beginnings and time consuming effort, the Land Cruiser seems to be here to stay, both in our consciousness and our hearts.

You want 'em--We got 'em!

So what's new about this year's Land Cruiser?  The 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser combines the grace you've come to expect in a luxury SUV with the pure muscle of the Toyota Tundra.  Inside there's a ton of room, soft, cushy seating, a large cargo bay, and the best part:  this thing is meant to be abused.

With a powerful 5.7 Liter V8 VVT-i engine, the 2010 Land Cruiser will do anything that is asked of it: towing, off-roading, or just casual Sunday driving, the versatility of these fantastic SUVs is unheard of.  Reaching up to 275 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, you'll rarely reach a point where your Land Cruiser says stop.  Coming standard with five-speed automatic helps preserve fuel, and the four-wheel drive, also standard, makes sure you never get stuck in Vermont's snow or mud covered roads; not to mention the optional TRD package (as shown) with the same tires that come in a Rock Warrior, BF Goodrich All Terrain Tires giving you even more off-road grip.

Options galore are available on the 2010 Toyota Land Cruiser, registering traction control, stability control, touch screen Navigation, DVD players, a louder-than-life stereo system, and much more.

The newest model year of the Land Cruiser certainly doesn't disappoint, living up to it's storied past through sheer toughness and power coupled with elegant power.  The bells and whistles make trips a little more comfortable, but the meat of it's existence is the same as it's always been:  a tough competitor in off reading and luxury circles.
