Ever since its release in 1984, the Toyota 4Runner has been a favorite among off-road fans, those with sophisticated style, and Toyota fans alike.  In fact, it's probably due to these reasons that the Toyota 4Runner is the last vehicle to be made in true fashion to cater to both the off-roading community and those looking for grace in their SUVs, and that the fans have loved and adored for 26 model years.

This year, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner is no exception...

Here to Stay, Whether the Others Want to Play or Not

It's all but over for some companies' mid-size SUVs.  GM canceled theirs last year for 2009.  The Dodge Durango?  Well let's just say it got the heck out of dodge.  The Ford Explorer, an popular model early on in the SUV craze is gone the way of the Dodo bird, or at least it will if it sticks with the body-on-frame design, a great flaw in modern auto-engineering.  Nissan doesn't seem interested in letting the "XUV" out of the stables next year either, whether due to poor design as the Ford or just flat out abysmal sales. 

As America's love affair with the 4X4 falls into the abyss of yesteryear, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner, along with any of its brothers and sisters you'll see cruising around St. Albans, Vermont's back roads or Burlington's Church St. area, are not climbing out of that abyss, although their rugged four-wheel drive capacities would certainly make short work of such an event.  No--the 4Runner need not jump in with these poor excuses for a trail rated SUV, because for years, 26 as mentioned, the Toyota 4Runner has let the way.  And now that the herd has gone astray, the 4Runner is here with little contention for the top place in our hearts.  But hey--its the 4Runner.  This mighty giant has been at the head of the pack for years, and trust me my friends, it plans to go nowhere but up.

The 2010 Toyota 4Runner is an apt name for the leader in its class (think forerunner), as it really leads the way for all others.  Before the 1990s saw a boom in the SUV market, the Toyota 4Runner already had a cult-like following among friends of the trails.

This is not a sedan in SUVs clothing, no, this is a fully functioning, trail rated 4X4, a vehicle sadly going extinct.  High gas prices have forced a lot of SUV-users into hiding their big-rigs in favor of the Toyota Yaris, Corolla, or Camry, but what most forget is the 2010 4Runner reaches a highly respectable 23 miles per gallon on the highway, even more impressive when one considers the bulk that the engine is pushing--this year's 4Runner looks far more aggressive than years past although this aggressive look does not compromise in the form of handling, style, or sheer curb appeal.  In fact, some would say that this year's 4Runner is the most attractive looking body style to date, harnessing a retro appeal from the early days while keeping hold of a modern look that fits it rather well.

As Popular Mechanics put it, "the 2010 Toyota 4Runner is the result of deliberate, cautious, evolutionary development," and by all accounts they hit that square on the chin.  Keeping all the performance we've grown to love and marrying this with stellar improvement is something the 4Runner has been doing for over a quarter century, and perhaps none greater than this fifth generation.  The 2010 4runner is built on the same platform as the rugged Toyota FJ Cruiser and is longer, wider, and taller than its predecessor.  Trim levels are available in SR5 (black 4Runner, above and top), Trail, and Limited (blue, second from the top), each equally satisfying in their own rights.

One of the best new features on this year's Toyota 4Runner is the addition of what Toyota calls the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS).  Available on the 2010 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition, the KDSS system uses interconnected hydraulic cylinders to measure front and rear stabilizers while driving off road, and adjusts them to optimal performance.  Best of all, when you're on a flat road like a highway, the system does not initiate since hydraulic pressure is equal on both the front and rear.  When the time comes to hit the trails and things get bumpy, this fully mechanical system notices the change in terrain and activates of its own accord.  In layman's terms it activates when it senses a wheel has dropped lower than the others, making this a smart vehicle and clearly a vehicle made specifically for the trails.

As Edmunds.com phrases it: "this is an SUV not for soccer mom's and city folk looking to make a statement," but rather for the hardened veterans of the off-road realm and fans of a trail better left untouched... By lesser SUVs, anyway.

And for those of you just looking to make a statement, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner, while remaining a fully capable trail-shredder, is handsome enough for a classy night on the town and luxurious enough for red carpet events--assuming the dust from your trail-running afternoon in the back roads of Vermont has been taken care of.

In terms of performance, there are several choices on which the 4Runner connoisseur to grasp hold.  At its base level, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner is now available in a four-cylinder for the first time since the 2002 model year.  With an inline-4 engine reaching 157 horsepower, even at its least expensive the 2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5 will take care of business with plenty of power to spare.

Making the jump in power, if needed, is a long jump indeed: hitting the 4.0-liter V6 mark, the 4Runner pushes a massive 270 horsepower (an increase of 34 hp from the 2009 Toyota 4Runner), 278 pound-feet of torque (an increase of 12 lb-ft from 2009), while maintaining the 23 mpg on the highway as last year.  In summation, the 2010 4Runner has more power, more torque, and remains just as efficient.

Exterior features were not spared a bit this year, as the 2010 Toyota 4Runner has just as much style as it does muscle.

The base SR5 comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, black fender flares and rocker panels, skid plates, fog lamps, cruise control, full power windows, locks, etc. with a power back-window allowing for extreme air flow in the hot Vermont summer air.  For playtime, the CD/MP3 audio system with a great speaker system and auxiliary jack make certain that you have all the music for whatever situation you may encounter.  The SR5 trim also has the availability of an upgrade to its 4WD V6 counterpart.

Making the upgrade to the Trail edition gives the 4Runner some extra flair in the way of a hood scoop, locking rear differential, off-roading tires, a rear-view mirror-integrated backup camera, snazzier gauges on the driver's console, and an upgraded audio system including satellite-ready, better speakers, a USB port, iPod connectivity and bluetooth.  And last but certainly not least, the Trail trim gets Crawl Control, which automatically slows you down and helps with braking on steeper hills.


Making the upgrade to the Limited edition, as one would assume the creme de la creme of the 4Runner world, you'll get bigger, badder 20 inch alloys, the upgraded Toyota X-REAS suspension system, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, a further upgraded stereo boasting 15 speakers and a six-disc CD changer, and leather just about everywhere you would want it.

The X-REAS system from Toyota gets its name from the "X" shape of the shock setup--the right front links to the left rear and the left front links to the right rear, hence the X.  This suspension system greatly enhances cornering, roll-over protection from which lesser SUVs suffer as the X-REAS system essentially pushes against the momentum of the 4Runner.  The system also enhances off-roading as it balances the 4Runners body much better than the already stellar performance of, for example, the 2010 Toyota 4Runner Trail.

The Interior

The Toyota 4Runner has never been one to forgo its roots in the off-roading, but that doesn't mean it will forget about the people driving the car--all the toughness in the world is great, but if you can't stay in the vehicle for longer than ten minutes because it's uncomfortable and poorly equipped, then it makes no sense to buy such a vehicle.  Lucky, the Toyota 4Runner has always lived up to expectations, and this year the interior is nicer aesthetically and practically than ever before.

The above mentioned increase in the vehicle's height, width, and length has added a great deal of room to an already spacious SUV.  With plenty of room for five and the optional third row to accommodate another two people, you can back plenty of passengers into this cavernous trail machine.  When you aren't using the third row, a maximum of 90 cubic feet worth of cargo can be loaded in the back area.

As stated, the optional six-disc CD changer, satellite radio ready 15-speaker system adds a level of comfort normally reserved for your living room surround sound system, and sitting in the plush, attractive seats, significantly more comfortable in the soft leather option, you may think you are in fact sitting on the couch watching a movie--the sound system and comfort levels are that high.  Edmunds goes so far as to compare the interior to what you would expect to find in a Lexus or Toyota Land Cruiser.

Below, these pictures show the 2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5, including the stereo and middle console on the left, and the other two pictures show the third row being activated.  In the middle picture you'll see little black clips--just pull, and suddenly there's room for two more people.  And with easy stowing of these third row seats, you regain your 90 cubic feet in the blink of an eye.
